For those of who don't yet know, Referral points are awarded when you get a new user to sign up to the site usiong your special referral code, which you can find in the "account info/activity" section of your profile home. It looks like this: http://www.redhedd.com/signup/friend_xxxxxx/, with "xxxxxx" being replaced by your username.
The best way to get people to use your referral code if you're going mano a mano, vis a vis, tet a tet, et cet, is to write your code down on cards to hand out. In the future, we'll have some cards premade we can send yous so that all you have to do is print in your personal code and hand them out, but for now, you guys are gonna have to do it DIY.
Now! If you're leveraging the fantastically awesome power of the Interweb, use good old html to embed your code in the link you send people. For example: http://www.redhedd.com/signup/friend_steve/ is mine.
That's ugly though, isn't it? But if I add a little html code, I can get a nice short pretty link that looks like "www.redhedd.com" but has my referral code embedded in it. To do that just add the following code within the brackets
Make sure not to add any spaces where they aren't already.
Mind you, this won't work with Myspace. Why? Because they suck. It will work with Facebook, Bebo, and every other social network. As well as discussion boards, email, blog comments, guestbooks, and whatever else your evil minds can dream up.
What will work in myspace is telling people to just copy and paste your code into their browsers.
Good luck! Gotspeed. And... Courage.
