He does go to the light side re watch the end of Episode VI he just dies after he converts.

I could spend my time explaining to you why he couldn't live/turn, but a simple answer will do.

His breathing plate on his chest was excessively damaged by Emp. Palpatine's flinging force lightning, this was when Darth Vader lifted him and through him down the shaft. With the Death Star in such chaos at the time no one would have been able to assist the damage.

Shorter version: Lucas wanted him dead, deal with it, lol.
