Cross Country trains and interviews in strange towns.
Posted On 05/27/2008 18:05:11 by PhillipS1961
So today I had the interview for that mobile administrator job - and I don't think I got it.

First of all, I had to get to my local intercity train station which is a station called Bristol Parkway, to catch a Cross Country Service to Taunton - oh did I tell you this is an interactive blog? this is where you need to fire up Google Maps.

Now Parkway is a reasonably new station, so it is logically laid out but to get to it takes a taxi ride £16.00 ($32.00) train ticket is £9.00 ($18.00) now that was the easy bit. Getting the train is tricky.

I have discovered railway timetables are a work of elaborate fiction. Grrrr.

Cross Country Trains were blaming everything on a) electrical faliures at Birmingham, b) a stowaway at Birmingham, and c) another - slower - train was sent out in front of it at Gloucester.

So we arrived at Taunton 40 minutes late - and I had allowed 45 minutes to get to my final destination

So leaving Taunton Station I had to get to the place where the interview was being held (and I only had 5 minutes in which to get there)

No Taxis at the station.

One finally arrived and in I get - this taxi fare is £6.00 ($12.00) as I find out that the business park is clear the other side of the town - so I arrive,  25 minutes late for the interview. And yes I did call ahead to let them know about this.

The interview, itself, was ok(ish) but ther was something in the way the interview was conducted that tells me I didn't get it (go figure )

And I do have other job apps going through - all of them in my home city.

It will all work out for the best - things usually do.  But the commute does sound killer!

Interestingly enough, I just had a call from the agency and the feedback they received was fairly positive, so all might not be lost.

They are interviewing someone else today and I should hear a decision by next Tuesday.

The job is good - it was just let down by the killer commute.

Awww, Phillip I am sorry that it turned out to be a dissapointment for you. It sounded like it would have put you out of pocket with all the travelling fares, so probably for the best. I think the job in your own homeground sounds better though and I am sure that will go well for you.

Hopefully somewhere nearer will work out, as late trains are never fun, and spending LOTS on taxis is rotten too

Well done for doing ok in your interview though!

I think something in your home city would be WAY better! Sounds like a mind-freaking NIGHTmare to get to that place!

Good luck, though, I know something great will come through

Well Phillip I do hope that you get it, I also applied for many many jobs before landing the part time job that I did. Its frustrating, upsetting and discouraging when you continue to apply but don't get the job you had hoped for. I am also thinking of applying for another job part time. It would sure help out around here and now I have a bigger bill to worry about.
